Teaching Salmon Culture

February 12, 2024

"I was educating the children on how the salmon was caught. It was caught by dip netting at Farewell Canyon. I wanted the kids to see salmon that was actually caught by dip netting. I gutted and fileted the fish in front of them and explained that after the fileting process, our elderly from my community, will get ready to smoke it in a smoke house, using willow sticks across the fish and then it gets put onto a pole to hang for smoking. I also talked about how my community elders and people eat salmon, there are different ways. I showed the kids a jar of salmon eggs which I cured for bait (fishing eggs) . My mother taught me how to do this. Excellent for fishing. This is our culture."
