Salmonid Program, Mrs. McCart

February 28, 2025

Throughout the school year, our library is blessed to host a salmonid program...from eyed-eggs to fry.  Part of this program is learning about the anatomy of a salmon, hence, our week of dissections!

Students learned all about the internal and external anatomy of the salmon, both through a guided dissection, and through hands-on examination of various parts, such as eggs, scales, heart, gills, eyes (including the lenses!), etc.

Students enjoy using scalpels (older students only!), microscopes, and tweezers to check out our salmon anatomy more closely.  This year, the grade 6/7 students were able to conduct independent dissections on several jack salmon which were provided for us, along with our two fully mature adults, by the Baker Creek Enhancement Society.

The main goal of the salmonid program is to raise awareness of the importance of salmon in our ecosystem, and the importance of maintaining a healthy salmon habitat in our waterways.
